Sand Polished Aluminum Buckles

Aluminum buckles first appeared in 1931 with wide scale production and distribution taking place during  the introduction of the M1935 combat helmet.  The buckles generally wore to a smooth finish but were durable and long lasting.  The aluminum buckles were eventually discontinued in favor of steel and painted steel buckles sometime in 1940.  However those in storage (as well as in active service) continued to be used through May 1945.  The leather on this buckle is a dark chocolate brown color.  The stitching that holds the buckle to the leather is done in black thread.
