This M1942 Luftwaffe helmet has been
modified by the addition of the Belorussian national colors decal on
the right side. Like other branches of the German Armed Forces
(Wehrmacht), the Luftwaffe also accepted foreign volunteers.
The largest of these volunteer groups was trained at a Luftwaffe
base near Frankfurt am Main. Serving as anti-aircraft
artillery, the majority of the volunteers were engaged in the
defense of the areas surrounding Berlin in 1944 and 1945. The
helmet below exhibits a hand applied two color scheme consisting of
brown and white. The colors are consistent with a
winter-spring camouflage pattern most likely used in early 1945.
Several thousand Belorussian volunteers served with the Luftwaffe
although few helmets of this type have survived World War II. |
