Field Police (Feldpolizei) units of
the Order Police (Ordnungspolizie-ORPO) were issued helmets that
possessed the common insignia of all police helmets. This
consisted of a silver eagle and wreath superimposed on a black
shield for the left side of the helmet, and the National Socialist
Party decal on the right. The first of these insignia to be
produced were intended to be used exclusively on police helmets.
This type came without a silver border around the eagle shield.
At the same time that this decal was introduced, a similar decal
with a silver border was issued for use on all Fire Protection
Service (Feuerwehr) helmets. The premise having been that
the silver border would enhance the visibility of the eagle shield
against the black paint of the firemen's helmets.
Interestingly, both decals were used interchangeably between
police and fire-fighting units. Field Police helmets
utilized both types of insignia which can be found on all helmet
models including the M1935, M1940, and M1942 combat helmets.
Field Police units always used both insignia on their helmets
regardless of regulations issued by other branches of the
Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. As a result this has become a trade
mark feature of Feldpolizei helmets. In some rare cases,
Field Police helmets can be found bearing only the eagle decal.
The assumption being that two decals were unavailable at the time
of application, or that the National Socialist Party decal had
been painted over during a field repaint or camouflage effort on
the part of the individual soldier or his unit.
