M1935 Army (Heer) Reissued Double Decal Combat Helmet

Many M1935 double decal combat helmets were repainted in the field or by military supply personnel in order to conform to 1940 regulations that changed not only the texture of paint but the number of decal insignia exposed on the helmet.  This M1935 helmet is an excellent example of this reissuing process.  The underlying finish is a smooth pre-war era "apple green" color with both insignia applied.  A portion of this green paint can still be seen around the eagle decal as well as inside the helmet.  The exterior has been "updated" by the application of a brush painted texture paint darker in color than the pre-war smooth finish.  Showing through on the right side of the helmet is the National tricolored decal.  Generally speaking when decals had a lacquer or varnish finish applied over the top the paint applied to them generally cracked.  This type of cracking is clearly evident on this helmet revealing the National tricolored decal below.  This configuration of M1935 would have seen service during the invasion of France in 1940 as well as throughout the war.
