Because the Free Indian Legion was formed in 1942, it is likely
that the majority of helmets provided to Regiment 950 were of the
M1940 and M1942 type. However, it is also possible that the
unit was provided with M1935 combat helmets and repainted World
War I model transitional helmets. Older model helmets such
as these were often issued to "second line" and reserve troops
after they had been upgraded and repainted in supply depots and
factories. Unfortunately, few photographs exist to verify
the type of helmets worn by members of the Free Indian Legion.
When issued, it is believed that most helmets were standard types both
with or without the single "Wehrmachtsadler" decal.
However a very small number of helmets do
exist which also posses the image of the "Legion Freies Indien"
insignia in decal form1.
This decal is identical to the arm shield patch in both color and
style. A second insignia type also existed bearing just the
orange, white, and green colors of India. Like most
Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS volunteer helmets, decals denoting a
volunteer unit's nationality were often placed on the opposite
side of the helmet in reverse fashion. However, this
practice was not always held to on a consistent basis. The
exact reason for the inconsistent placement of insignia is
unknown.
Notes:
1
Only a handful of helmets of this type are believed to be
authentic. Some reproductions do exist although the number
is small. When encountered, Free Indian Legion helmets
usually bear the silver "Wehrmachtsadler" on either the right or
left side of the helmet. On the opposite side resides the
large decal insignia of the Free Indian Legion in either colored
form or with the leaping tiger and words "Freies Indien." No
helmets have ever surfaced bearing the insignia of the Free Indian
Legion and the runic shield of the Waffen-SS.
