This close up photograph shows how laborers worked to insert the M1931 liner into the helmet
shell. Their workspace contains a cloth table mat that is designed
to prevent any damage from occurring when handling the helmet and securing
the rivets into place. New helmet liners are placed along the work bench
and are inserted into the helmet shell. A specially designed tool
assists the workers in attaching and flattening the prongs of each split
rivet once the retaining washer is placed on the inside rim of the
helmet. These photos illustrate the time involved to assemble each
helmet which must have been enormous given the fact that it was done all
by hand labor. The M1935 helmet in the center of the photograph
clearly shows the tilted white swastika decal found on prewar police
helmets. At the very far end of the workbench can be seen a stack of
completed helmets with paper wrapping covering them to prevent scuffing
and marring of the finished coat of paint. From the lighting
illustrated in this photo, it would appear that the women are working in
front of a series of large glass factory windows. |
