Decal Description

The first Air Protection Police (Luftschutzpolizie-LSP) helmets were beaded M1935 models decorated with two decals one on each side.  On these early helmets the first pattern, unbordered police eagle decal was used on the left side while the standard first pattern National Socialist Party decal was placed on the right.  Many of these helmets were repainted Security and Assistance Service (Sicherheits und Hilfdienst-SHD) helmets bearing the common Air Protection (Luftschutz) decal.  Most M1940 and M1942 beaded helmets used after 1942 exhibited the bordered police eagle decal to assist in making the insignia more visible opposite the dark blue-black paint finish of the helmet.  Several different styles of decal were used mainly due to the many printers who manufactured and supplied police insignia.  The decals used on Air Protection Police were the same as those found on other police helmets used during the Third Reich.

A number of surviving helmets exhibit odd placement of both police decals in that each is situated slightly to the rear of the air vent.  Many collectors believe this may have been a result of the decals not conforming well to the curved portion of the beaded edge of the helmet.  However, in some cases it was common practice to apply decals in such a way that they were situated in the exact mid portion of a helmet.  Due to a general desire for uniform aesthetics, this practice was common with other helmets used by other government and civilian organizations during the time of the Third Reich.
