     Luftschutzpolizei Period Photos

Two members of the German Air Protection Police (Luftschutzpolizei) wear standard "beaded" combat helmets with two decals.  The man at the forefront wears an M1942 pattern helmet recognized by the sharp edge of the helmet.  Both helmets bear the second pattern, bordered police eagle decal common to most helmets introduced after 1942.  This photo was taken during one of the many Allied bombing raids over Germany during World War II.  Noticeable in the background is a pile of rubble from buildings destroyed in the raid.  The Luftschutzpolizei were responsible for assisting air raid volunteers accomplish their tasks, as well as to maintain order among the general population during and after the air raid.
