Young German women wear standard two-piece gladiator helmets as part of their overall uniform for voluntary service in the Air Protection Warning Service (Luftschutzwarndienst).  On 2 April 1943 Hermann Göring authorized women to participate in this voluntary corps whose role it was to oversee air raid warning systems and to serve as aerial observers in search of Allied bombing formations over Germany.
