Politische Gruppen:  NSDAP - National Socialist German Workers Party Helmets

Helmet Description

Not until the year 2006 did it become known that members of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei-NSDAP) worn helmets.  Until this time, most historians, as well as collectors, believed that helmets were not used by this political group.  However, as early as the year 2000 some helmets began to surface that indicated possible NSDAP use.

Today, at least four examples have been identified which give clear evidence to the fact that the NSDAP did in fact use helmets as part of its regalia.  Each of the four examples is identical in every way save for overall condition and age.  At least three of the helmets were located in the Netherlands.  All helmets consist of the late war patterned Luftschutz single piece helmet design over painted in NSDAP brown color.  The insignia on each helmet consists of the standard National Socialist Party insignia combined with a previously undocumented shield insignia depicting the NSDAP eagle.  Overall, these helmets are quite scarce1.

Notes:

1 No reproductions of these helmets have ever surfaced.  However, collectors should be aware of the fact that reproductions are likely to enter the retail market in the coming years as a result of this information being published on the Internet.  In most cases, all fabricated helmets surface after reproduction artists become aware of new, rare, or unique helmet configurations previously undocumented.  Fortunately, each of the original helmets documented thus far are identical with details not easily duplicated.
