Wehrmachtsgefolge:  NSKK - National Socialist Motor Corps Insignia

Insignia Description

Insignia worn on combat helmets of the National Socialist Motor Corps (Nationalsozialistischen Kraftfahrkorps-NSKK) consisted of standard Luftwaffe or German Army (Heer) decal configurations.  This was due largely to the fact that helmets issued to members of the NSKK came directly from both Luftwaffe and German Army supply centers.  As a political organization, the NSKK relied on Armed Forces (Wehrmacht) supply sources for all military equipment.  As a consequence, few combat helmets worn by NSKK members can truly be attributed to this organization since they bore no distinct NSKK markings.

However, some helmets issued to the NSKK were modified by the addition of an insignia that took the form of an eagle bearing the NSKK letters in a banner.  When applied to the helmet, the NSKK decal generally appeared on the left side.  Occasionally a second decal in the form of the National tricolored shield was applied to the right side of the helmet.  Most double decal helmets with NSKK insignia are M1935 helmets, although double decal M1940 and M1942 helmets of this kind also exist.  As a political organization, the NSKK was not bound by military regulations that called for the removal of decals for improving concealment in combat.  As a result, some M1940 and M1942 helmets bearing both decals have been observed1

Notes:

1 Collectors should note that helmets bearing NSKK decal insignia are few in number.  Excellent reproductions of these helmets have been produced since the mid-1980’s and are often sold as originals.
