M1940 Double Decal Combat Police Helmet

This M1940 double decal combat police helmet was captured in Italy by a US military serviceman.  The helmet was period repainted by the German soldier who wore it.  A fine coat of field green paint has been brushed onto the helmet by hand.  The decals were masked as evident by the paint found around them.  The metal head of the front left retaining rivet is missing and paint was applied directly over the top of the rivet.  The configuration of this helmet demonstrates that many helmets were repainted in the field by the soldiers themselves.  Only close examination of such details can reveal the story behind the helmet.
