A number of variations in the
standard German Police (Deutsche Polizei) eagle decal can be found.
The first pattern decals were printed on black without a silver
border. These were generally used on helmets beginning in the
mid-1930's. The second pattern decal was identical save for
the fact that a silver border was placed around the black shield.
These decals, while used by police units, were in fact originally
designed for placement on black firemen's helmets. Due to the
popularity of the bordered version of this decal, it became standard
with both police and fire units. In some rare cases, variant
pattern decals were also printed. The pointed bottom decal on
the right side of the top row is an example. This particular
decal is believed to have originated in Austria prior to World War
II.
