Reichsarbeitsdienst:  National Labor Service Period Photos

Helmets sitting on top of the graves of RAD men who were killed in the invasion of Russia in 1941.  Of particular interest is the fact that a full variety of helmets were issued and used.  The photo clearly shows M1935 helmets bearing double decal German Army (Heer) insignia as well as some with no insignia.  In addition, M1916/17 helmets are also shown.  The World War I model helmets were likely pulled from surplus stock, refinished, and reissued to the RAD unit for combat purposes.  Many older pattern helmets were issued to reserve and secondary troops.
