    Sturmabteilungen:  SA-Standarte Feldherrnhalle Helmet Photos

The helmet shown below depicts a very rare example of the SA Feldherrnhalle (SA-FHH) combat helmet worn by members of this elite unit.  Very few M1942 pattern helmets bearing double SA-FHH decals have surfaced since the end of World War II.  This example was recently purchased in the early part of 2006 from the estate of a former US Army veteran who served with an armored division.  This helmet was one of several items he brought back at the end of the war.  The family stated that the veteran had driven his tank into a German house in order to destroy it, and afterwards went inside looking for articles when he came across this helmet and several books pertaining to the life of Adolf Hitler and the 1935 Olympics.  This helmet bears the interesting configuration of having had the SA-FHH decals originally applied onto the standard Luftwaffe blue-gray painted helmet, then later having a second set of decals reapplied after the helmet was hand painted dark brown.  The helmet is a large size 68cm and perhaps is one of only 10 known examples of SA-FHH known to exist.
