Only a handful
of original photographs exist depicting the SA-Stabs-wache Röhm
Helmet in actual use. Some photographs of the helmet
(illustrated below) were taken at the 1935 National Socialist Party
Rally in Nürenburg, Germany. However, this was many months
following Ernst Röhm's arrest and murder by Adolf Hitler. One
explanation for the photos may be that the Staff Guard continued to
wear helmets of this configuration after Röhm was disposed of.
The other explanation may be that his appointed replacement (Lutze)
authorized the helmets or continued use since they were already in
service. The most reasonable explanation seems to be that the
helmets were in fact authorized by Röhm, but were then eliminated
from general use after the 1935 Party Rally. This explanation
is plausible since Adolf Hitler disbanded all Storm Detachment
Groups (Sturmabteilungen-SA) in 1935 save for his own (SA-Standarte
Adolf Hitler). Helmets of this sort are considered extremely
rare with only one example having been established as original.
The helmets were painted a light "SA Brown" color. The helmet
depicted is a light weight remanufactured version of the standard
World War I pattern Austrian helmet. These helmets were
produced to supplement the SA's inability to acquire military goods
from the German Armed Services (Wehrmacht) which dominated control
over these materials.
