Volkssturm Sauerland Helmet - M1942 Combat Model

This M1942 combat helmet bears one of three insignia types known to have been used on original helmets of the well known Volkssturm Sauerland unit.  The helmet is a standard factory issued M1942 model with a single Sauerland decal.  The decal differs in several ways from the many reproduction versions currently being reproduced.  The is an identical match to the one in the possession of the West Point Military Museum at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.  Helmets of this type were probably decaled and issued on a local basis to members of the Volkssturm Sauerland after 25 September 1944.  This helmet shows very little use overall.  This is not surprising considering the fact that the members of Volkssturm Sauerland were volunteers and former members of Freikorps Sauerland (established in the 1920's) and consisted mainly of factory workers, school teachers, and former soldiers of the Kaiser's Army of World War I.
