Freiwillige: Foreign Volunteers Helmets - Spanish Legion Insignia

Insignia Description

Members of the Spanish “Blue Division” were authorized to wear the red and gold  tricolored insignia of Spain on the right side of their standard issue German helmets.  Photographic evidence indicates that this insignia was always worn in conjunction with helmets that also bore the German Army (Heer) eagle which appeared on the left side of the helmet.  The Spanish national colors were sometimes applied with paint using both hand and stenciled techniques.  However it has also been clearly established that decals of this kind were also produced in Bavaria and supplied to the first volunteers to be deployed in Russia during 1941.  Propaganda photographs from this time period show the Spanish national colors on M1940 pattern helmets worn by members of the 250th Infantry Division in Russia.  Painted versions of this insignia were likely applied in 1942 or 1943 when decals of this kind were no longer available.  Helmets with both insignia are considered very rare and few originals are known to exist.  Exact dimensions for the Spanish national colors insignia have not been clearly established.  In addition, no helmets bearing Armed-SS (Waffen-SS) runic insignia (in combination with the Spanish national colors) are known to exist.
