An early form of insignia observed on helmets worn by SS Foot Regiments (SS-Fuss-Standarten) included hand painted white double runic symbols on top of the black painted steel helmet.  These insignia have been observed in pre-war photographs of both SS Foot Regiments 24 (Oldenburg) and 31 (Landschut). 

Insignia was placed on both sides of the helmet which bore a gloss black paint finish.  It is not known whether any of the additional 125 SS Foot Regiments used this style of insignia on their helmets.  Many helmets worn by early Allgemeine-SS units bore no insignia whatsoever. 

After 1934, it is believed that SS Foot Regiment helmet insignia was standardized to conform to those of SS Special Detachment groups (SS-Verfügungstruppe or SS-VT).  This insignia would eventually evolve into that which was common to all Waffen-SS helmets after 1940.

Early runic symbols applied to SS Foot Regiment helmets appear to be hand applied with white paint and were not supplied in decal form.
