   Schutzstaffeln: Sicherheitspolizei (Security Police) Helmets

Helmet Description

Members of the Security Police (Sicherheitspolizei) utilized a number of steel helmets.  The most prominent of those which were used was the M1934 medium duty helmet.  This helmet was of a heavier gauge metal than typically found in standard civic police helmets.  Four rivets were used to hold the liner in place.  Liners were typically of the civic model or three pad variety.  Chinstraps often were of the same but could include carbine clip types generally used in the mid to late 1930's.  Helmets were painted a light to medium smooth finish field-gray color inside and out.  Decals were generally used and applied in standard SS format.  This included the first pattern runic shield on the right side of the helmet, and the National Socialist Party decal on the left1.  In some cases, members of the SD would apply these decals in reverse order.  The exact reason for this application method is not fully known.

Notes:

1 All SD helmets established as originals appear only to have the first pattern runic shield applied.  This is true whether the decals are in reverse order or not.  While it is possible that some SD helmets utilized the second pattern runic shield introduced in 1937, none have fully come to light.
