   SS-Wachverbände (SS Guard Units) Helmets

Helmet Description

The SS Guard Units (SS-Wachverbände) were issued standard SS configured helmets generally painted black.  Early photos of these men often show them wearing transitional model M1916, M1917, M1918, and Austrian pattern World War I helmets.  In an effort to distinguish the men of the SS-Wachverbände from other SS formations, an order was passed in March 1935 that gave permission for a large white Prussian style Death's Head (Totenkopf) to be painted on the left side of the helmet.  Photographs of these helmets in use are generally quite rare, although those that do exist clearly show the skull insignia on the left side of the helmet.  Helmets of this type were generally used during training as well as in parades and unit ceremonies.  The use of the Totenkopf insignia was rescinded by an order given on 12 August 1935.  This new order called for uniform insignia to be placed on all SS helmets regardless of unit designation.  The new insignia took the form of the runic symbol (right side) and the National Socialist Party shield (left side).  Transitional model helmets were eventually replaced with the newer M1935 field gray helmet bearing both insignia.  Most early transitional model helmets are believed to have been either repainted for use by the SS-Verfügungstruppe, or collected and melted down for their steel.  As a result, few if any helmets of this type survive to this day.
