| Volkssturm Sauerland Helmet - Gladiator Model |
|
This exceptionally rare Volkssturm Sauerland helmet was found in Holland just outside Amsterdam. The helmet features one of the three unusually patterned Sauerland decals. Of interest is the fact that the helmet has been period repainted in a thick field green military paint common to that normally found on combat helmets. The paint and decal are original to the helmet as are the liner and chinstrap. Upon close examination, one Sauerland insignia has been placed on top of another Sauerland decal. The decals are positioned on the left side which was standard regulation for placement of this insignia. Occasionally this insignia can also be found on the right side of a helmet. There is reasonable evidence to conclude that this helmet was once used for home guard duties prior to repainting for the newly formed Volkssturm Sauerland unit. Many surplus helmets, including some Luftschutz Gladiator style helmets, were collected, repainted and issued to the Volkssturm in 1944. |
