Decal Description

Helmets worn by the Water Protection Police (Wasserschutzpolizei) were often adorned with standard police insignia.  In some cases the eagle decal was produced in a golden color to denote the standard traditions associated with naval related duties.  The actual number of helmets produced with the golden colored decal is unknown1.  Few surviving examples exist to gauge and accurate assessment of the total number produced.  Both bordered and unbordered versions of the decal exist.  While both decals were introduced on the same date, those with the border were intended to be used only on Fire Protection (Feuerwehr) helmets.  However, both decals were often interchanged with the preference tending to lean towards those with a border.

Notes:

1 Collectors often mistake standard silver colored police eagle decals for that used by the Water Protection Police.  The reason relates to how a decal ages over time.  Helmet decals that were applied with a lacquer top coat often age down to a golden color.  This color can in fact be quite convincing to the point that it appears the entire decal is made from golden colored material.  Most "Water Protection Police" helmets identified by today's collecting community are in fact standard police helmets with this aged effect.
