    Schutzstaffeln: Waffen-SS (Armed-SS) Period Photos

This rare photograph from a German SS veteran's album shows SS-Lieb-standarte "Adolf Hitler" (LAH) members wearing double decal M1935 German Army (Heer) helmets.  This photo was taken in 1937 when members of the LAH were beginning to be integrated into the SS Special Detachment groups (SS-Verfügungstruppe or SS-VT).  Records indicate that the first supply of M1935 helmets provided to the SS were given to members of the LAH.  At this time, the LAH was being converted into a military fighting unit as noted by the field gray woolen uniforms in the photo.  Uniform collectors will note the first pattern "LAH" enlisted men's shoulder straps and the early cuff title.  Collar badges are pre-war versions piped in silver wire.  The man at right wears a brown Reichswehr era K98k Mauser cartridge pouch.
